Improve Your Singing- Major Intervals

Intervals are the basics in music that make it possible for people to write and read music and construct harmonies as well as chords. The distance between two notes is called an interval. This distance is usually measured in numbers. All intervals in music are measured from the scale’s first note. The intervals are usually given names, and a numeric value. Some major intervals are, C-A major sixth, C-E major third, C-D major second, and C-B major seventh. The major intervals in a pentatonic scale are 1 2 3 5 6 1. A major interval can have a harmonic sound when two pitches sound at exactly the same time and it can have a melodic sound when two pitches follow one another in the piece of music. The major intervals exist alongside other intervals such as the minor, augmented, and diminished. Major intervals are one-step bigger than minor intervals.

In major intervals, some steps can only be a half step apart. A half step or a semitone can lower or raise an interval. When a major interval is reduced chromatically, it becomes a minor interval. An example is if a lower step lowers C-E major third (C-Eb) it will become a minor third. If a half step raises a major, they become an augmented interval. When compound intervals extend to the second octave, they become majors ninth or compound major second. When intervals undergo inversion, they reverse the position of the notes. When inverted, major intervals become minors and the minor intervals become majors.

If one wants to recognize a major interval, they should associate it with the two first notes of a tune that is common to them. One should also sing the intervals as they learn them. Singing intervals can help a person internalize the sounds so that they will recognize them any time they hear them. One can also recognize an interval if they first recognize it on the staff. Second intervals are usually next to each other. Thirds are usually found on adjacent lines and spaces and so on. A singer can also learn to recognize major intervals by listening to them regularly and reading them until they can identify them without a problem. The learner can get software programs that have these intervals to help them from the internet and other outlets. Without knowledge of music intervals , and not only the major ones, a person will have a very difficult time when writing, playing and singing as they are important for the making of good music. One should try to go out of their way to learn them and look for professional help in case they encounter any problems when learning the major intervals.
